Meet Will
Will Truitt, Chairman of the Dutchess County Legislature & Candidate for Dutchess County Comptroller
Will Truitt is a lifelong resident of Hyde Park and Dutchess County, deeply rooted in the community he now proudly serves. A graduate of the Hyde Park Central School District, Will was elected both Class President and School President at FDR High School, where he first discovered his passion for leadership and public service.
At just 15 years old, Will began working at Molloy Pharmacy, assembling weekend newspapers and assisting customers at the front register—an early example of his strong work ethic and desire to contribute to his community. Raised in a close-knit family, Will draws inspiration from his parents: his mother, Kathy, who left her job at Rhinebeck Savings Bank to raise Will and his younger sister Julia, and his father, Bill, a retired Hyde Park Police Police K-9 Sergeant and D.A.R.E. Officer who now serves with the Village of Fishkill Police Department.
After graduating from FDR, Will attended Marist College, majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance and Accounting. While studying, he also worked part-time at the college post office and interned in the Office of County Executive Marc Molinaro, collaborating with the Budget Office and assisting with constituent services.
In 2015, at just 19 years old and a sophomore in college, Will made the decision to run for the Dutchess County Legislature, driven by a deep commitment to giving Hyde Park and Poughkeepsie residents a strong, responsive voice in county government. He won that first race with 55% of the vote and has since been re-elected four more times by increasingly wide margins.
Over his decade of service, Will has built a strong record of results and leadership. He has served in numerous leadership roles, including Chairman of the Legislature, Majority Leader, Chairman of the Budget, Finance & Personnel Committee, Chairman of the Government Services Committee, and Vice Chairman of the Public Safety Committee.
Will’s accomplishments in office speak to his commitment to fiscal responsibility, transparency, and public safety. Under his leadership, Dutchess County has delivered 10 consecutive years of property tax rate reductions, providing meaningful relief to taxpayers. He has championed millions of dollars in youth investments through the Learn, Play, Create Grant program, expanding opportunities for local kids and families. He helped establish the Dutchess County Animal Abuse Registry to protect vulnerable animals, and he sponsored and successfully enacted term limits and ethics reforms for county elected officials—strengthening accountability and trust in local government.
Will has always stood in strong solidarity with law enforcement, working to ensure police have the tools, training, and resources they need to keep our communities safe. In fact, since Will Truitt became Chairman of the County Legislature, Will has worked closely with the District Attorney’s Office and the Dutchess County Drug Task Force to target those peddling poison on our streets which has led to a significant reduction in opioid overdose deaths in Dutchess County by more than 50% since 2023.
In addition to his public service, Will works full-time as the Financial Manager for Metzger Construction Corp., a local small business based in Hopewell Junction—maintaining a grounded perspective on both the public and private sectors.
From his first campaign to his current leadership, Will Truitt remains committed to service, integrity, and always putting community first. He’s never forgotten where he came from—and he’s never stopped fighting for Dutchess County families.
